We have worn masks for as long as we have been a human species. We have worn them as disguises and distractions, for protection or to make a statement. Our ancestors made them of wood and bone and shells and clay. In our contemporary culture, however, we tend to wear more subtle masks – ones of flesh and psyche. Many of these masks have been created in response to abusive power. Often we are not even aware that we are wearing them.

There is an art to discovering habitual, “invisible” modern masks. There is an art to appropriating and transforming their energy to a new purpose.
This is what Breaking the Silence is all about. The exhibit (consisting of over 80 pieces of art) has toured for 10 years to make visible a whole range of visceral emotions in response to the abuse of power.
The collection of raku masks and paintings has received international acclaim. Originated to promote awareness of child sexual abuse, it has evolved, in response to viewers’ and therapists’ requests, into international workshops on healing through creativity. Katheryn is currently working on completing a Breaking the Silence book to bring the power of the exhibit images and the healing wisdom of creativity together between two covers.
We are immersed in a culture in need of healing from abusive power, in need of images that speak what we feel. Breaking the Silence presents these images, and offers itself as a catalyst for healing.
The first Breaking the Silence exhibition had a dramatic impact on both the media and the public in the early ’90’s and for the next 15 years toured throughout the United States and Europe.
There were exhibits with lectures in San Francisco, California; Kalamazoo, Michigan; Three Rivers, Michigan; San Diego, California; Kansas City, Missouri; South Haven, Michigan; The United Nations, New York, New York, USA; and The Hague and Leiden, The Netherlands.
Masks from Breaking the Silence was shown in Progress of the World’s Women, an international exhibition that featured seventy artists from more than fifty countries that was shown in the visitors’ lobby of the United Nations in June of 2000. The exhibit opened at the start of the Special Session of the United Nations General Assembly, which reviewed progress achieved in gender equality. The exhibition presented a collective statement in bold artistic terms of the power of women at the opening of a new millennium. The exhibition—a collection of works of art across many cultures, mediums and materials—aimed to expand contemporary understanding of the world and inspire our imaginations to envision a future world where the promises of the UN Fourth World Conference on Women had been fulfilled.\n

Many years ago during a silent retreat I had an epiphany. I realized that the greatest treasure I hold is buried deep inside - the thing I least want anyone to know about. This ultimately birthed the In Your Own Skin Project.
Social worker Brené Brown, along with neurobiologists and other researchers, discovered that if you want to look at happiness you need to look at shame. To help free myself and others from our shame, so we can live more authentic, resilient lives, I went out into the world, armed with body paints and video and still cameras, to record people discussing their hidden truths. I then painted that word onto their skin and photographed their portraits.
While creating the project, I met with over 200 people from more than 30 countries and all walks of life. Each of these powerful moments releases a generous contribution to the world, a buoyant reminder of living fully and the beauty and strength that comes from facing and embracing our vulnerability. This in turn grows our intimacy and presence.
Each photograph and recorded exchange documents a personal story that resonates across cultures. We find what we have in common, what makes us human.
As an artist and an art therapist, I have specialised all of my professional life in the masks we wear and the taboos that no-one wants to speak about - what American writer Robert Bly calls “our shadow bags”. These more hidden aspects of ourselves hold great treasures and vitality when they are freed. We are a living paradox and the sooner we learn to dance with this, the sooner we can live more fully alive.
The project is made up of hundreds of individual images but they are all part of one giant human poem - all unique, but all part of the same poem forest. In the 1950s, it was discovered that a variety of Aspen tree, the Pando, while it looks like tens of thousands of trunks and crowns, is actually one living organism - they all have the exactly the same DNA. So while we see them as many, they are actually one. Just like us.
We are living in unprecedented times of political, economic, ecological, social and emotional transition. In Your Own Skin portraits and stories reveal a living transformative story in a world searching for hope, wisdom and resilience - what keeps us connected and whole from the inside out.

Katheryn Trenshaw
Katheryn Trenshaw, the founder and creative director of the Passionate Presence Center for Creative Expression, is an American-born UK-based international artist, author, celebrant, speaker, film-maker and facilitator who has been offering workshops and consulting for more than 40 years.
She has been a professional artist for over 45 years and holds two BA Hons in French & Psychology, as well as a host of postgraduate study in academics, arts, movement, and trauma-informed somatics.
As a teacher, facilitator and consultant, Katheryn has a rare gift for encouraging expressive risk-taking within a safe setting. “The media in which I work are magical ones: the unpredictable qualities of raku-fired ceramics and wet-washed watercolours that often seem to have a life and message of their own to blend with mine. Katheryn Trenshaw is a fine artist of international repute. She is American born and received her BA degrees from Michigan State University and L’Universite Haute Bretagne, France. For more than 40 years her work has been exhibited extensively throughout the US and Europe. Concentrating largely on watercolour painting, print-making and ceramic sculpture. She has received critical acclaim both as a painter and a sculptor.
Being involved in the creative arts since she discovered her opposable thumb, Katheryn redefines art as a way of living and inspires people to recreate their own lives as works of art, tapping into it as a vehicle for the soul’s expression. Her continuous commitment to personal growth through living her life as art enables the creations to come from a deep, integral place. People resonate with the simplicity of the images and the magical quality they imbue into the every day.
Katheryn has a new In Your Own Skin book available at Amazon. This is part of a large community multimedia art project including a documentary (currently being crowdsourced) and an exhibition. In Your Own Skin connects us all by revealing hidden truths from around the world. With her camera, body paint, and the quest to explore how people choose to show themselves to the world, Katheryn Trenshaw, photographer, documentarian, and artist, approaches total strangers and asks: What is true of you that is not obvious to strangers? The results are fascinating and frequently very touching. Katheryn's unique and sensitive approach has now created nearly 150 portraits of subjects from more than thirty countries and all walks of life. These will eventually form a touring exhibition and screenings.
The Educator, Inspiratrice and Evocateur of Presence and Possibility
Katheryn Trenshaw isthe founder and creative director of the Passionate Presence Center for Creative Expression.
She is an international artist, speaker, author, and radical well-being facilitator who has offered, for over 45 years, training and facilitation in movement, art and personal development particularly focused on awakening as embodied consciousness. She conducts educational events, workshops, multimedia projects and undertakes consulting for individuals, groups and organisations in the United States, Europe, Asia and around the world. She is also a celebrant from time to time for select clients.
Katheryn has a rare gift for encouraging expressive risk-taking within a safe setting. Her contagious passion for life and her ability to encourage celebration and making the everyday sacred are hallmarks of her work. Her numerous lectures, workshops and worldwide exhibitions are testament to this, where she has connected to people from all around the globe.
Her touring exhibition, Breaking the Silence, depicting the traumatic effects of sexual abuse and the subsequent struggle towards healing through 100 raku masks, had a dramatic impact on both the media and the public in the early nineties. The resulting publicity catapulted Katheryn onto the international lecture and workshop circuit. Her talks and teachings on art, therapeutic creativity and women’s issues are currently in great demand.
All of Katheryn’s work is also deeply rooted in nearly four decades of somatic movement, and embodied consciousness.

My work is rooted in an art-and-somatic-therapy approach to revealing and integrating traumas, fears and history that are still affecting and hindering your life. I will simply accompany you as we inquire together into the past and help you reclaim the present.
There is nothing to change. When you work with me, I will not be looking to fix you. You are not a problem and I do not have an agenda for your life.
When we pay attention and stay here, no matter what is going on, we wake up. We are even filled with awe and wonder.
I will accompany you on your journey and inquire with you into the root of old hurts, lies and myths and help you reveal, untangle and de-construct the concealed.
I will help you discover the health that comes when we connect the contradictory and often fragmented aspects and parts of our experiences. I will support you in cultivating awareness of beliefs, thoughts, emotions, feelings and behaviours that move you through your suffering and into authentic, essential wellbeing.
